In-Person Programs

The Data Science in Biomedicine MS is an online, part-time program designed for students who are employed full time. In-person programs connect students to UCLA's research community, to faculty and visiting researchers, and to one another.

This structure differs from fully online master’s programs that have no in-person component, and from research-based graduate programs that require full-time attendance. 

In-person programs include the Fall and Spring Symposia, CGSI, LABEST, UCLA Health Data Day, and the Biodesign Boot Camp. Attendance is encouraged but not required. Students are not required to reside in Los Angeles.

The in-person programs include:

Data Science in Biomedicine Fall Symposium — December 11, 2026
One-day program event for students, faculty, and invited guests focusing on Genomics and AI in Medicine. The program includes faculty research presentations, student presentations of course projects and a preview of Biobank AI.

Data Science in Biomedicine Spring Symposium — April 2, 2027
Parallel one-day event. The program includes faculty presentations, student presentations, faculty panel, and a preview of Biodesign AI. 

Biodesign Boot Camp — early September, UCLA campus
In-person opening of Biodesign AI. Students join the UCLA Biodesign fellowship cohort for clinical immersion and instruction from mentors in healthcare, life science, and technology. The boot camp precedes the fall offering of Biodesign AI.

LABEST — most recently held May 18–21, 2026; 2027 dates to be announced
Annual Los Angeles Bioscience Ecosystem Summit, organized by the UCLA Technology Development Group. Recent meetings have included talent-connection, MedTech, and Bioscience programs. Provides contact with the regional bioscience and medical-technology community.

UCLA Health Data Day — most recently held June 16, 2026;  2027 dates to be announced
Annual symposium organized by UCLA Health Information Technology and the UCLA Center for AI & SMART Health. Invited talks and a data-product exhibition on data, analytics, and AI in care delivery. Relevant for Biodesign AI, Biobank AI, and capstones that use UCLA Health data.

CGSI Computational Medicine week — July 26–30, 2027
NIH-funded Computational Genomics Summer Institute, organized by the Department of Computational Medicine. Students are invited and encouraged to attend the Computational Medicine short program (genomic biobanks and machine learning in health). CGSI is the primary in-person research program affiliated with the degree. A spring pre-CGSI topics course is offered for first-time attendees.
